Introduction

The landscape of medical affairs is evolving rapidly, with Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) becoming increasingly central to the strategic, compliant, and scientifically rigorous exchange of medical information across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries. As organizations place greater emphasis on evidence generation, real-world data, external expert engagement, and patient-centered scientific strategy, the MSL role has expanded beyond traditional field-based scientific support into a highly strategic function within medical affairs.

For Clinical Trial Liaisons (CTLs), this evolution creates a compelling career pathway. CTLs often possess many of the foundational capabilities required for MSL success, including clinical trial fluency, protocol-level understanding, investigator engagement, and the ability to translate complex data into meaningful scientific discussion. However, while the CTL and MSL roles overlap in several areas, they differ in strategic focus, stakeholder objectives, and day-to-day responsibilities.

This article explores how CTLs can successfully transition into MSL roles by identifying transferable skills, understanding competency gaps, strengthening scientific communication capabilities, building a compliant approach to KOL engagement, and positioning themselves effectively in an increasingly competitive job market.
